UNION Glashutte ?Contemporary since 1893
The history of the UNION watch manufactory begins at the end of the 19th century, in the quiet little town called Glashutte in the eastern Erzgebirge mountains in Saxony. Once famous for its rich silver deposits, the town is known today throughout the world as the birthplace of German exquisite watchmaking.
Among the great names who founded the fame of Glashutte, special honour is due to one in particular - Johannes Durrstein - the founder of the Glashutter Uhrenfabrik UNION Durrstein & Co.
Again and again, the watch wholesaler Johannes Durrstein saw that only few people could afford to buy the very expensive watches made in Glashutte. So in 1893 he founded the Glashutter Uhrenfabrik UNION. He concentrated on the production of watches with proven Glashutte quality, although at significantly more affordable prices.
The solution - UNION watches with everything that made them accurate, but with nothing which made them more expensive. For example, at the beginning he also dispensed with the use of gold housings. In addition to robust, utilitarian designs, he often also created highly complex precision watches, thus demonstrating his own outstanding watchmaking skills.
The UNION manufactory has remained loyal to the tradition of fine Glashutte watchmaking and the watchmakers strive with their precision handcrafted movements to create items of timeless aesthetic appeal.
In honour of Julius Bergter who developped the "Universal watch" in 1901 (the most complicated watch ever manufactured in Glashutte) UNION has produced a very limited edition of exquisitely crafted manual winding watches.
Classical details such as the swan-neck fine adjustment, gold chatons, blued screws and exquisite finishes are evidence of the ultimate in watchmaking skill. Manual winding UNION Glashutte watches - masterpieces of time and works of unexcelled craftmansmanship.
