Waltham Watch Company was founded in 1850 by Aaron Dennison, Edward Howard and David Davis. Historical records have chiefly retained the charisma and vision of Denisson. A man of English origin, he carried with him a fervent "old-world" love of fine watchmaking. Denisson was well aware of the limitations of the "cottage-industry" approach to the trade prevailing at that time. It was in the US that he found the men and the means to give shape to his vision to promote the purchase of precision watches by a broader public thanks to standardised manufacturing.

In fulfilling his dream, Dennison pooled his talents with those of inventors, technical draughtsmen, craftsmen, designers and expert watchmakers. The new concept implied inventing machines, developing new methods and training unskilled workers in the new technologies as they arose. In 1876 at the Universal Exhibition in Philadelphia, Waltham earned the Gold Medal for the precision of its lot of watches taken at random from its production, ahead of the reputed European watchmakers of the period.

After a prosperous century dotted with a string of historical landmarks and a production of more than 32 million quality watches, Waltham had to change course, since Switzerland offered better development prospects. It was there that Waltham International SA found the new impetus required to preserve Waltham's extremely rich historical heritage.

Brand strategy is geared towards more limited editions, with a marked emphasis on exclusiveness and watchmaking innovation. Sales are focused on a traditional Waltham Market, Japan, where over 4000 watches in 18K gold are sold annually…

… But that is not the whole story. Waltham is now pleased to announce the upcoming start of its internationalisation and (re)introduction on other traditional watch markets, timed to coincide with the start of the new century and the brand's 151st anniversary which will be officially celebrated in the autumn of 2001.
